Eric, one of the 5th graders, at RRO decided that he wanted to build and program a machine that solved the Rubix Cube. Eric told us how he had worked very hard mowing lawns, shoveling snow, and raking to earn enough money to buy a Lego Ev3 robotics kit. He shared that he did a lot of research to look at other people's designs to help him create his own creation. During that research he was able to find someone who had all ready written this type of program and he plugged his own numbers in to make it work for his cube. Eric brought his Rubix Cube Solving Robot to school to share it with the other classes. They were amazed and inspired! Good job Eric! Oehrli 4th and 5th graders practiced their coding skills with some different kinds of robots borrowed from the MAISD. We started out with Ozobots, small robots that can be coded on paper, on an ipad, or on a computer. Students learned how to break a complex task into several smaller simpler tasks. They also learned to debug programs when they found a problem. We also had fun learning how to program the Dash and Dot robots to move and to sense the environment around them with their built in sensors. We even programmed our robots to tell jokes! We will be doing coding activities with all grade levels during Hour of Code which is during the first week of December. I try to teach the students that many of the electronics they use have dangerous chemicals inside them that are needed to make them work. We collect old electronics and laptops as well as batteries to dispose of properly. It is important that we don't throw these electronics and batteries into the regular trash where they can leak out of a landfill and into our soil and water. We need to get these items into a Hazardous Waste site that has extra protections to keep these harmful chemicals from polluting our lands and waters. Every fall and winter, Muskegon County plans a day where county residents can bring their hazardous waste to be disposed of properly. This Saturday, April 23rd, will be the Spring Collection. All grade levels have been learning computer science. We kicked it off during the Hour of Code in early December. We have been learning about algorithms, loops, events, and other kinds of programming language and thinking. The third, fourth and fifth graders have been working through 14 coding puzzles to learn the basics so they could make their own Star Wars game. Below are some examples and some thoughts about the whole coding experience. Click on the student name to get to the student's game. Click Run to try out the game and click How It Works to see the programming behind the game. Enjoy! Mrs. Kraai's ClassEmma When you start the game, there will be three Stormstroopers. They will be at a slow speed. You will also start with eight mouse droids. But, every Stormstrooper you get, you will LOSE ten points. Every mouse droid you get, you EARN ten points. The game starts with a circle map. When an obstacle is touched, it will play a mouse droid two sound. R2-D2 is the character you will be. Make sure you don't get caught by the Stormstroopers! If all of them catch you, you LOSE the game. But, to WIN the game, you have to find and get all eight of the mouse droids. Kaitlynn Stay away from the stormtroopers. Use the arrows to get random characters to win the game. Sophie Get all puffer pigs and try to get no storm troopers. Wyatt To win my game you need to collect all the mouse droids. CP-30 will be your character. Your backround will be the star ship. You will have to get 8000 points to win. Kaden You need to get all the rebel pilots and make sure you don't get caught by the stormtroopers. Sophie Get all puffer pigs and try to get no storm troopers. Leighton In order to earn points you need to get all the storm troopers, as well as winning. You will have to get all the storm troopers to win and to get points. I learned how the website works and how to make a game. Hailey When you get a puffer pig you earn 1000 points to win the game you have to get 1000 points. To lose the game you have to not have 1000 points. Also when you get a storm trooper you lose 10 points. I learned that you can build your own stuff and have fun. I'm proud that I made it to level 15 so I can make my own puzzle. Will You need to try to get as many Probots as you can and if all the stormtroopers get you, you lose. It's easy to do and fun. Mia Try to collect the puffer pigs. When you get a puffer pig you will get 10 points. When you get a storm trooper you lose 10 points. Zach Stay away from probot and get mouse droid. I'm proud of my effort. Benny Inverted - Every key is inverted. To win, you must avoid all the stormtroopers and get all the probots. Start with 2 Puffer Pigs. Get them to get Rebel pilots, to get 1 stormtrooper and 2 mouse droids. When you get all the mouse droids, you get 3 Mynocks and 1 more stormtrooper. Again, get all the Mynocks for Tauntauns and get all those for Probots, 3 stormtroopers, and the stormtroopers are fast. When you get all the probots, you win. Touch a stormtrooper and lose. Good luck! I learned that anything is possible. And I mean everything. I am most proud of my ideas, always. If I had more time I'd make it even HARDER, but that is as hard as I could go without changing how the game works. Mr. E's ClassJohn In my game you need to hold the down arrow for 30 seconds and then let off and let them come to you. When you get all, hit left arrow. Get Taun Tauns for points. Braeden In my game all you have to do is press down on the left arrow and you win. Brock Get all puffer pigs Collin S To win the game you have to get a puffer pig /to earn points you have to get any animal Emily First of all you have to try to get all the stormtroopers and not get the probots,if you get the probots it takes away points. And then if you get the stormtroopers it adds 300 points. You have to try to get all of the characters but still even if you lose points. This is a pretty long game but you still can win. Emma P You try to get the puffer pigs and the storm troopers without touching the obstacles and the walls. If you touch the walls you loose ten points. If you get a puffer pig or a storm trooper you get a thousand points. Emma S When you touch an obstacle it adds characters. You have to get all the characters to win. It also removes points when you touch obstacles. Kaleb You have to get all puffer pigs but don't get one mouse droid or you will lose. Katie In order to win the game, you need to get all of the puffer pigs, and avoid the rebel pilots. Kendal The goal of the game is to get all of the puffer Pigs. Liam Get all of the rebel pilots, but don't touch the storm troopers Lily To play the game you have to collect all of the puffer pigs but every time you press an arrow it changes the background. Peyton In the game the objective is to collect all of the puffer pigs, storm troopers, and mouse droids to win the game. Qinlan The goal of this game is to get all the storm troopers Silas You have to try not to move left if you do you will make a storm trooper appear. Summer If you get all storm troopers you get 1000 points and you win . If you hit one obstacle you lose. Zach The goal is to get all the puffer pigs. Mrs. BrissetteApril Run around the world of star wars and try to collect all the puffer pigs and the mynock's! But watch out don't touch the storm troopers they'll take away your points! Get all the mynocks and you'll win! Gillis Advance through the 3 levels without getting all the stormtroopers. Get the other creatures to get through the levels. Rescue all the animals from all 3 levels to win the game. Each level gets harder as you go. Killian no win no lose have fun Mr. Hedrick's ClassAdalynn When you get a probot you loose 100 points. When you get all mouse droids you get 2,750 points. Alissa You need to get a Puffer Pig to add Probots. When you get all Probots you will win. When you get all Puffer Pigs you end game as a win. Avah Up is down left is right and so on.You have to get all of the storm troopers. Blake You need to get all the storm troopers. But you can't hit a ogitet. Bryce Try to get all the random things Chloe When you go left you actually go the opposite way. You have to get all the puffer pigs to win the game. You have to collect all the rebel pilots to lose the game. Emma To win,you need to get all the characters. If you hit an obstacle, you lose 300 points. Jacy You have to try to get only one puffer pig so it adds stormtroopers. To end the game as a win you have to get all the stormtroopers and when you get a stormtrooper it adds a puffer pig which you do not want any more of. If you get a stormtrooper you will get 300 points. If you get a puffer pig it will take 300 points away. Lucy You need to get all the rebel pilots before you get all the probots. Melanie To win you need to get all of the characters. When you get them all you will win. River If you get the stormtrooper you lose. If you get the tauntaun you win and the controls are complicated. Ty Do not get the stormtroopers Owen You need to get all the puffer pigs with out getting any storm troopers. Mr. Sawin's ClassEli When you get a stormtrooper you lose but when you get all puffer pigs you win. There is a random map and you change the speed for more challenge. I am most proud of learning Java. Wyatt First you need to get all the puffer pigs. Then you need to get all the stormtroopers to win the game. When you hit the left arrow you go right and when you hit the right arrow you go left and when you go down you go up when you go up you go down have fun playing my game. I learned that coding is fun not boring. My friends played my game and loved it so much so that encouraged me to make more games. I am proud of my game because it took me a long time to make so I think that it is pretty cool that it took me so long. Mrs Woller's ClassJoli The users needs to get all the stormtroopers to win the game. You have to pay very close attention to how you do it or it might not work when you create it. Jordan You win when you get all the Mynocks and there is no losing. You are set in the droid suit, and battle ship background. If I had more time to work on it, I would make it longer and make it change to a different background.A little more peaceful background and have more things to collect like different animals and scoring points to win as well to getting all of the different animals.
We really try to instill a culture of independence, problem solving and collaboration in the computer lab. First graders have been learning how to write code to solve puzzles that get increasingly complex. They are responsible for listening to the lesson and then working together to solve these problems. Often times, when I ask a student if they need help, they will tell me that they figured it out. That's music to my ears!
White Lake Whalebots and CodeSharks competed at the Grandville Tournament with 42 other teams in the First Lego League competition. FLL competitions consist of 4 parts that are scored by judges: robot build and programming; missions completed in 2 1/2 minutes; teamwork challenge; and research project and innovative solution. Both teams worked hard during the season and that hard work paid off. Code Sharks succeeded in completing all of their planned missions in round 1 and scored the highest score of all the rookie teams in that round. The Whalebots took home the first place trophy in research/innovation solution. The judges were impressed with their innovative "Mealwormia Diner" styrofoam composter and their mealworm farm to raise mealworms for the composter. Good job Whalebots and Code Sharks! Several RRO students went to the Mini Maker Fair at Barnes and Nobles. A Maker Fair is an event created to celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science and the Do-It-Yourself projects. Students built with different types of building blocks, experimented with circuits, watched some 3D printing, and worked with different types of building and programming toys. RRO students collected a 5 gallon bucket of batteries to send to Hazardous Waste Day this fall. Usually, we collect about three buckets a year. I have a feeling that we will be collecting more this year!! Thanks to all of you who are keeping batteries out of the landfills, which can leach and get into nearby soil and groundwater. It’s a great habit to start young. Please remember to put tape on nine volt battery prongs or any battery where the positive and negative prongs are on the same side.
Most grade level classes have been discussing the AUP and how it relates to the Wildcat Hero Expectations. Our youngest students have been learning how to fill each other's buckets during computer lab.
If you would like to see a copy of the AUP, Acceptable User Policy, which is found in the Student Handbook in Appendix N, click here. Third graders designed a comic that had a bullying situation and a stepping up strategy. They designed these on the computer and are sharing them in the cafeteria as well as on our weebly. Enjoy!
