White Lake Whalebots and CodeSharks competed at the Grandville Tournament with 42 other teams in the First Lego League competition. FLL competitions consist of 4 parts that are scored by judges: robot build and programming; missions completed in 2 1/2 minutes; teamwork challenge; and research project and innovative solution. Both teams worked hard during the season and that hard work paid off. Code Sharks succeeded in completing all of their planned missions in round 1 and scored the highest score of all the rookie teams in that round. The Whalebots took home the first place trophy in research/innovation solution. The judges were impressed with their innovative "Mealwormia Diner" styrofoam composter and their mealworm farm to raise mealworms for the composter. Good job Whalebots and Code Sharks!
Several RRO students went to the Mini Maker Fair at Barnes and Nobles. A Maker Fair is an event created to celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science and the Do-It-Yourself projects. Students built with different types of building blocks, experimented with circuits, watched some 3D printing, and worked with different types of building and programming toys. RRO students collected a 5 gallon bucket of batteries to send to Hazardous Waste Day this fall. Usually, we collect about three buckets a year. I have a feeling that we will be collecting more this year!! Thanks to all of you who are keeping batteries out of the landfills, which can leach and get into nearby soil and groundwater. It’s a great habit to start young. Please remember to put tape on nine volt battery prongs or any battery where the positive and negative prongs are on the same side.
